Theories Within The Media
Propp
Vladimir Propp developed a character theory for studying media texts and productions, which indicates that there were 7 broad character types in the 100 tales he analysed, which could be applied to other media:
1. The villain (struggles against the hero)
2. The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object)
3. The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest)
4. The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)
5. Her father (usually dies during or before the film/book)
6. The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off)
7. The hero or victim/seeker hero, reacts to the donor, weds the princess
Tzvertan Todorov
Narrative is the organisation given to a series of facts. The human mind needs narrative to make sense of things. We connect events and make interpretations based on those connections. In everything we seek a beginning, middle and an end.
Richard Dyers star theory is the idea that icons and celebrities are constructed by institutions for financial gains and are built to target a specific audience or group of people.
Dyers theory can easily be broken down into segments such as:
- Audience and institutions
- Constructions
- Hegemony (Cultural Beliefs)
Mulvey
Laura Mulvey coined the term “male gaze” in 1975. She believed that audiences have to “view” characters from the perspective of a heterosexual male. The concept of gaze is one that deals with how and audience views the people presented.
For feminists it can be thought of in 3 ways such as:
- How men look at women
- How women look at themselves
- How women look at other women

Discovering that her dark past was suddenly coming back to haven't her. Faye played by academy award winning Faye Ledgerton, takes you through her excruciating journey of struggle to avoid death.
Actors List
There were two main actors in the film, the victum who is played by Faye Ledgerton. The reason why Faye was chosen as the victum was show that she could show a "young vunerable girl" who is then followed by a killer and then is declared as missing.
The killer in the trailer was played by Ellena Gore, the reason why Ellena was casted as the killer was because she was taller than Faye, therefore we needed the killer to be more dominating. Another reason for choosing Ellena was because of her choice of costume as she already had them to hand such as the black coat, the knife, gloves and boots. Therefore she was perfect for the role of the killer.
Marketing Campaign
Woman in Black
The Woman in Black is a 2012 psychological/supernatural horror-thriller film directed by James Watkins and written by Jane Goldman, and is based on Susan Hill's novel of the same name. It was produced by Hammer Film Productions.
One marketing stratgie which was used was to played on the role of that Daniel Radcliffe was the lead actor throughout the film. Also this was the next main film for him since Harry Potter. This method is successful as you can gain viewers automatically from just Harry Potter fans.
Another method of marketing that was used was a 'teaser campaign' this involved a Halloween competition which was used through youtube. The winner recieved goodies which Harry Potter fans would like such as mugs and t-shirts etc. The opportunity to see the London Premier and other merchandise from the film Woman in Black.
The first official UK teaser poster was released on 24th August 2011, followed by the full UK trailer being released on 14th October 2011.

Synergy Between Trailer/Cover/Poster
Film packages tend to include many different forms of conveying similar information e.g. trailer, a website for the film itself, a poster, a main article in a magazine about the film and the actors involved and more. This use of synergy is used to promote and advertise the film to a wider audience across the global by the use of internet and social networking sites. Taking this into consideration the film I have chosen to research is 'Insidious' as it is the same genre as the trailer that I am currently producing, this film was promoted in many ways such as the Google search engine.
The film also has its own official website which shows the poster of the film and includes other information such as a blog which has been written by a woman who is 'haunted from the dead'. The website also links you to there Twitter and Facebook links and has a link of which you click on to watch the trailer on Youtube. The website also promotes the DVD to the film. http://www.insidious-movie.com/
IMDb and Wikipedia are also used to promote the film, as they are well known websites.
Thoughtout this use of synergy certain conventions remained the same so that the film can be recognised.
- The little boy which appears on the poster has also been used as the main image on the background of the website. It's also displayed on IMDb and Wikipedia. This has been used to associate them all with the film.
- The same colour theme has been used throughout the poster and website, such as black red and white text, the house as the background image with the dark clouds and the eyes on the little boy which makes the poster unique. The same lighting has been used to show that there is something 'devil' like about the little boy and shows that he is the "evil" character within the film.
- The use of Richard Dyers star theory has been used as on every poster you see of this film they have stated what other films that the creaters have produced, therefore this appeals to a wider audience as people who have liked films such as 'Saw' and 'Paranormal Activity' will be more willing to go and see the film as they know what to expect.

Friday the 13th Film Trailer
The scene opens with a extreme long shot to show the scenery of where the film is going to take place the camera angle then changes to a low angle shot to show tree in the woods also showing more scenery. The low angle shot then continues as it shows a car speeding down the small lane, the camera shot then changes to a medium shot to show the two characters inside of the car suggesting they nare the main characters throughout the film. A medium shot is then used again to show that they are travelling in a car then a close up to show the other members who are inside the car, a voiceover has then been used by one of the characters saying "you won't believe my parents cabin" therefore this is another insight to the location of the film.
A long shot is then used to show a lake, then the camera turns to show the car pulling up outside the cabin as the teenagers get out of the car. A medium shot is then used to show the teenagers faces as they take a trip around the house, which then changes to a high angle shot in a long shot showing there surroundings and how many characters there are within the house/film. Expansion of time is then used as a series of shots are used
to show the personailty of the characters which shows them drinking and dancing. A long shot is then used which shows a girl on a water board which is attached to a speed boat in the lake that was shown earlier in the trailer then she walks into the lake, a blank screen is then shown suggesting that something bad is about the happen.
A extreme close up is then used of the girl in the water as she looks into the woods and something mysterious is hiding behind a tree, a extreme close up is then used again showing the reaction to the girls face as she is crying. A soundtrack is then used at a low pitch to show that something "is coming" on screen shows text which shows the name of the producer. This has been used so that fans of Michael Bay will go and see this film as they would have seen his previous work. A close up is then used which shows pieces of paper saying "MISSING" and the face of the girl that we had seen in the lake previously. This suggests that the person in the woods we seen a couple of scenes before is a killer.
A close up is used on a new character as he knocks on the door of the cabin to say that he is looking for his sister who is the missing girl from the posters. A series of shots are then used which are flashes of medium shots to show the two characters looking around the woods in hope of finding the girl. The screen goes black to then show a medium shot of the new character knocking on another door who is then greeted by an old lady. An over the shoulder shot is then used as she tells him "she ain't missing" to show the reaction of the characters face. The black screen appears again and a voiceover is used of the old ladys voice again saying that the girl is dead.
Another scene then appears to show the producers of this film have produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre therefore this will attract fans from this film to see Friday the 13th. Another reason for doing this is so that reviews can expect what the genre of the film and the style is going to be beforing going the cinema to see it. A voiceover is then used to gain the viewers information about the film which states that 'if people go missing round here they gone for good'. The camera then shows a medium shot of two people who are inside a tent and a shadow appears behind them, a black screen is then used to create tension as the soundtrack picks up the pace.
A series of scenes are then shown of the characters involved. Close up shots are mainly used to show the reactions of the characters faces. A long shot is also used to show there location which is in a house as doors slam and characters run round corners. Over this the soundtrack is played which sounds like doors slamming and is high pitch creating tension, speech is also used including words such as "what is it". A cut away is then used and a black screen appears to show a scene change. A close up shot is then used to show the name of the lake which sets the scene as two police officers are shining a torch onto it suggesting that the girl still hasn't been found. A close up is then used to show a girl covering her mouth with his hand and the soundtrack stops suggesting something bad is about to happen.
A medium shot/two person shot then shows a girl opening a shower curtain and the killer is in the background of the girl, from this a soundtrack starts with a fast pace to show the tension and the horror. From this scenes then cut to and from the film to show the killer striking and a blank screen showing numbers from 1 to 13 to represent the film and possibly how many times the killer has striked.

Insidious Film Trailer
The scene opens with mysterious music that shutters every now and again to suggest somehting is moving real quickly, which makes the viewer paranoid. The first thing you see is the title of the film, you then hear a voiceover which says "are you ready" then the first actors appears. The use of the voiceover helps as it may be a rhetorical question asking the audience are they ready which makes them a part of the film. The next scene includes the use of text showing that this film has the same producers as such films as "Paranormal Activity" and "Saw". This is useful at the beginning at the trailer so it attractions fans from those films to come and see Insidious, it is also useful so that you as a viewer will know what time of film to expect before going to see it.
Then a use of short medium shots are used which tells part of the story, from this you gain information that theres a family of 4 with 2 young children who have recently moved into a new home. Throughout these short scenes they have included the name of the movie again which helps viewers remember the name of the film. A close up shot is then used on the mother of the house as she looks confused and is walking through the corridor into one of the child's bedroom. A soundtrack is used over the top to create tension and to show that something bad is about the happen. A medium shot is then used as you see the rocking horse rocking and the mother stops it and the camera zooms out to show the confusion on her face. A loud non dijetic sound is then used and the falsh of the name of the film appears again.
A series of short clips are used again to set the scenes such as showing the young child go into his bedroom, a strange sound on the baby monitor and the mothers face to this. A long shot is then used as they open a bedroom door to show the child in his bed and a voiceover is used suggesting that there is something in the room with him which they cannot see. A close up is then used of a door knob to show that they can't enter the room and then a close up showing members of the family running.
A close up is then used showing an old lady saying that "she doesn't think bad wiring is the issue here" then an extreme close up is then used on here eye to show the quick movement as she looks worried at the ceiling. A high angle shot is then used to show the old womans face as she looks worried which suggests that something must be bad. Expansion of time is then used again as they show a series of short scenes to link into what has happened involving the old lady and voiceovers are used over the top of these scenes as narration.
A narration is then used which quotes "its not the house that is haunted its your son" which gives an insight to the story line. A series of still images are then used to show characters faces as they look in horror and a soundtrack is used throughout of a quick loud fast pace creating tension. The last thing used for the trailer is the use of the film name again and the date of which it is in cinemas, this will help audiences to remember as the name is used throughout.

Friday the 13th Film Poster
This film poster works well due to the lighting and the lack of information which it suggests, therefore making people wonder what the film is going to be about therefore making people want to watch the film. The use of the medium long shot gave the full image of the character and the background of the scenery. The character being the main focus suggests that he is possibily the killer throughout the film due to the use of props and that you can't see a clear image of his face as he is wearing a mask suggesting he is a criminal. The smoke coming from the background onto the character suggests that theres been a fire of some sort which questions did he set the fire off. The use of the title being in red draws attention to the poster, also the use of colour symbolises blood or danger which is relevant to the genre of the film. They have also used a subheading which quotes that this film was created by the same produces for 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' therefore this will attract fans from that film to come and see Friday the 13th.Friday, 28 September 2012
Insidious Movie Poster
This is the film poster for the 2010 horror film 'Insidious'. The poster consists of dark colours which relates to the genre and the theme of the film suggesting that it is going to be dark and mysterious. The main image of the poster is the little boy suggesting that he is the main person throughout the film, however they have scratched out the eyes which leaves the audience asking why. They have also included information about previous films which have been produced by the same company such as Saw and Paranormal Activity, therefore this is an insight for people who see the film poster as they will get a sense for the film as they can compare it to Saw and Paranormal Activity. This has also been done so fans of those films will be more likely to go and watch Insidious as it is of the same genre and same producers. The background image of a house which gives an insight to the setting of the film and makes people question is that where the little boy lives, this also links into the text under the title of the film which states 'Its not the house thats haunted'.The Dark Knight Rises Magazine Front Cover
This is a magazine front cover which features the Joker from The Dark Knight. This image is just simply however effective because it doesnt give away to much information about the character. Also the background of the magazine gives away clues to the type of character he is and the gun which he is holding in his left hand. The house style consists of dark colours, suggesting that this character is mysterious and dark. The green text has been used to highlight the character as he is wearing a green waistcoat under his jacket, this has been done to draw the attention of readers as the colours link to the character. The position of the character suggests that there is something strange about him by the way he is stood and his positioning. The background of the image and the gun suggests that the genre of the film is going to be action packed as there are tall buildings in the background with sparks of fire next to the Joker. The anchorage of the cover is that the main image is in front of the masthead
suggests that the actor and character are bigger than the magazine and will sell
it. This magazine front cover is effective because it makes you ask questions about the character therefore making you want to see the film which is the aim of the magazine cover. It is also effective because of the image used as it doesn't give away to much information about the character making you want to find out more for yourself.Spiderman Magazine Front Cover
This front cover is for the Spiderman movie. The house style of this magazine is red black and white which links into the costume of Spiderman and the red has been used as that is the colour of the original Spiderman costume. The main attraction of the magazine is the hand which has been set forward before anything else, this suggests that this is a main focus point to what the film is going to be about, also by the positioning of the hand. The look on the character face suggests that he is serious and has an important role throughtout the film. The image has also been placed over text therefore suggesting that this character is important as there are no other images on the page to draw the attention away. The magazine also includes puffs and tags such as free posters. This cover is effective because it doesn't give away to much about the character therefore still makes you want to see the film. It is also effective because of the layout of the front cover as it makes you focus on the photo which is the most important part.History of Trailers
The first trailer clip we watched was 'Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs' which was from1937. This was the first time Walt Disney had produced a cartoon film, along side of making a trailer for the film. This film was the first full length feature film. The trailer seemed to be longer than 2 minutes and lacked a lot of information. For example 'Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs' is a family film; however this was not portrayed in the trailer. The trailer consisted of a loud voice over which sounded like an announcer in a deep tone of voice as he described when the film was coming to cinemas and who had produced the film etc. The trailer didn’t include clips from the clip, however included the producer who talked you threw the 7 dwarfs and told you there names and there reason being. Over all, the trailer included large text and a loud voice over with poor graphics comparing to the technology we have now.
We then watched the same film however they had remade the trailer in 1987, this trailer was different from 1937 as it included actual scenes from the film, therefore giving the audience and insight to what the context of the film was. This trailer also made the target audience for the film clearer as you could understand that it was a family film. However they remained with the same loud voice over, this may have been used to represent the original trailer.
From 7 dwarfs we moved onto another Disney classic. The trailer for 'Cinderella' was made in 1950, however the technology hadn’t changed. The large text was used throughout the trailer with the loud voice over announcing sound. The trailer lasted 17 seconds, therefore not giving a lot of information about the film. Also not at one point of the trailer did you actually see Cinderella as you was behind the big bold text that they used. This trailer again did not give the target audience.
We then watched the trailer for the film ‘Gone with the Wind’ this trailer was made in 1939. The trailer consisted of loud music over the top of scenes from the film; however they still remained on including large text over scenes therefore not seeing the full scene. However in this trailer they had edited scenes so that it showed the faces of the actors which then included large text with the name of the actor. The trailer also included information about how popular the film was.
From this clip we watched 'Casablanca' this trailer was from 1942. The trailer was in black and white however the remained the big thick text throughout which gave information on actors. The trailer also explained the plot of the story; this hadn’t been done in the previous trailers. They also included music over the top of the trailer at the last few seconds.
We then watched a trailer from 1960 which was for the film ‘Psycho’. The trailer still remained to be in black and white, however this trailer seemed to last longer than 2 minutes. The trailer consisted of an older man, who explained the context of the film however he walked round from different parts of a haunted house which was used in the film almost like a tour guide effect. There was horror music used on certain words which he spoke. Over all this trailer didn’t make any sense and didn’t explain what the film was going to be about.
A commentator was then used again throughout the ‘Star Wars’ trailer in 1977. However this trailer consisted of more scenes from the film, they had also attached music to the scenes which was a loud and tense sound, therefore giving a feel of what the film would be like. The trailer was also now in colour, however you could see that technology had not yet developed from the certain parts of the clips.
In1981 the trailer was made for ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’. However in this trailer you could see that technology had changed as they had ran the characters voices over the scenes that the audience could see, however they kept the style of having a voice over with the loud music over the top of the action. However this trailer showed more scenes from the film comparing to previous trailers.
We then watched the trailer for ‘Terminator’which was from 1991. From this trailer you could see how technology had improved as during the trailer they used special effects which seemed better than previous years. The whole trailer consisted of scenes from the film which was better as the audience could understand what the film was going to be about, however some of the scenes from the trailer were not featured in the final finished product of the film.
We then watched the trailer of the ‘Titanic’from 1997. The trailer included footage from the film therefore allowing the audience to understand the story, however narration was still used over the scenes to explain certain parts and give information about the success of the film. The trailer included fast editing and highlighted the special effects that were used therefore this showed a transformation in technology.
Then finally we watched the most recently trailer of 'Snow White and the Huntsman' which was released 2012. The soundtrack which was used linked the scenes that where being shown, this was different from the other trailers that we had seen. Also footage was shown throughout the trailer from the actual film itself and the trailer was exciting comparing to the others.

Summary of Coursework Brief
We have been asked to create a trailer for a film which has to consist of different types of camera shots and angles. The trailer has to be 2 minutes long and to be catchy and draw the attention of the audience. We have also been asked to create a poster for the trailer we create and a magazine front cover which will feature the trailer that we have produced. Along side drawing up story boards and analysis other posters/trailers.
